Avebury Excavations 2025

Our Avebury Society thanks goes to Brian Edwards for inviting a few of us to tour the excavations at Avebury and to Josh Pollard and Anna Collar for the fascinating and detailed tour, which I summarise very briefly, herewith.

Great Excavations: revealed more than expectations! ‘Fortune and glory’ goes to Josh Pollard and Anna Collar …. they were ‘digging in the RIGHT place’. Josh showed and explained the evidence of Mesolithic to early Neolithic causewayed earth workings.  After several trial holes they hit their ‘X’ (‘X marks the spot’!) just to the north of the stone circle.  Anna and her team exposed a large area of Roman era stone structures and a Roman bronze broach of a calibre that ‘belongs in a museum’.  This was Indiana Jones in the flesh!
