Who We Are

Preceded in name by ‘Save our Skyline’ and ‘Avebury in Danger’, The Avebury Society was founded in 1994 by local residents.

The group was created in response to concerns with developments and proposals that threatened the nature and preservation of the village and the World Heritage Site.

The Society works for the benefit of the area five kilometers around Avebury including the village and the World Heritage Site. The Society is affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology.

Our Mission and Vision

Promote Knowledge

Support Respectful Planning

Our objectives are to promote knowledge of Avebury’s history, monuments, buildings, farming and natural history. Support respectful planning and design within and around the village and designated World Heritage Site. Protect and improve the environment of the Avebury area.

Activities and Partnerships

Engagement and Advocacy

Our activities stem from the wishes of members and include working with our parish and county councils as well as local landowners including the National Trust when relevant. Commenting on planning applications and issues with respect to the UNESCO WHS status. Working with others to encourage the maintenance of, and respect for, the Avebury site and its nature, including its footpaths and byways, traffic calming measures and discouraging inconsiderate and destructive traffic both on- and off-road.

Events and Fundraising

Community Engagement

Our activities include lectures and debates relevant to Avebury, displays on various aspects of Avebury including its history and archaeology, publishing and promoting events in the village, and providing a forum for local people to hear about and discuss proposed changes and issues in the area. We also engage in fundraising to help meet various needs in the area, for the enjoyment of local people and visitors, retaining authenticity and to help protect the World Heritage Site
